Royal wedding events in Shanghai

By Chelsea Girl in China

If you don’t remember the wedding of Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles, you may well have seen pictures of Royal wedding gatherings and thought to yourself “How quaint and old-fashioned” seeing Aunty Maureen in a Union Jack hat, “So 1981”, and yet, the question on a lot of British women’s lips now in Shanghai is “Where can I find a red, white and blue fascinator?” If you have suddenly come over all patriotic and embraced your latent monarchist, the following Royal wedding events in Shanghai may come in useful.

Are you catching Royal wedding fever?

The most expensive way to celebrate is by buying a ticket to the Langham Xintiandi’s gala ball which will set you back 988RMB (£93) per person or 8,888RMB (£833) for a table of 10. Starting at 5pm on April 29, an hour before the wedding, there will be a live screening of the ceremony followed by a four-course meal and a charity auction. Contact Donna Campbell for details: donna.campbell@langhamhotels.com.

To coincide with St. George’s Day and in celebration of the wedding, expat group Brits Abroad, is holding a red, white and blue ball on Saturday, April 23 in the beautiful surroundings of the Fairmont Peace Hotel. The black tie event is 950RMB (£89) for members and 1,150RMB (£108) for non-members for a four-course meal and free-flow wine and beer. Proceeds are going to the Wheelchair Foundation.

But perhaps the most popular place to be on April 29 will be O’Malley’s at 42 Taojiang Lu, near Wulumuqi Lu which will be screening the wedding live. This is a special edition of Brits Abroad’s regular ‘Drop-in Drinks’, which I’m reliably informed has in the past been dubbed ‘Drop-in Drunks’. The group is providing a special buffet afternoon tea from 4-7.30pm including cucumber sandwiches and strawberries and cream. There will be special Royal wedding prices on Pimm’s, champagne and sparkling wine and a happy hour from 6.30-10.30pm on selected wine and beers. 60RMB (£6) per person, 70RMB (£7) for non-members. Sign up at www.britsabroadshanghai.com. Hats and gloves optional.

And as for wear you can buy that fascinator in Shanghai, Katy Gow, president of Brits Abroad, tells me to head to Fuyou Lu commodities market. So you’re all set.
